There are a number of different raw materials that are suitable for the deep draw process. Today we will examine deep drawing with Copper.

Accurate Forming works with Copper for applications with OEM’s in the fields of plumbing, temperature sensing, electrical, ordnance and many others. These parts may be exposed to climate/temperature as well as having some type of fluid running through them. The standard grades of copper that Accurate Forming will deep draw are C11000 and C21000.

Because of the softness of copper the amount of tonnage needed at the press is similar to low carbon steel which is much less than when deep drawing stainless steel. Copper has fairly good corrosion resistance although it does tarnish and discolor rapidly. When compared to low carbon steel copper is a much more expensive material making it more important to utilize the copper strip to its fullest and reduce the amount of scrap. This will help to keep the cost down for the customer.

Using copper in the deep draw process offers very good dimensional repeatability along with very good wear life for the tooling that is making the parts. Because of the softness of copper different wall thicknesses can also be achieved.

If required for cosmetic reasons copper can be polished for a very pleasing aesthetic look but will need to be coated to prevent tarnishing. This is also another valuable asset of utilizing copper if the need for a decorative part is desired.

Copper when used for the right applications is a valuable raw material. Please contact Accurate Forming at (973)827-7155 or at [email protected] or visit our website at www.accurateforming.com to learn more about what Accurate Forming can do for you.
